Katsuhiro Ōtomo gave some extra effort to make the film more realistic to the fans. Earlier, the Japanese anime (animation) movie shows lip movement of the characters where the face remained static. However, in the movie Akira, viewers got introduced with the face movement with while reciting the dialogue. The movie was made in 1988.

The story was also written by director Katsuhiro Ōtomo. The complexity of the story can be overshadowed by the animation quality of the movie.
